The State Opera House

Budapest hotels

Located in central Budapest, The State Opera House was built in 1884, designed by architect MiklosYbl who designed the Opera House using a beautiful neo-Renaissance style that stands out in central Budapest. The Opera house was renovated in the early 1980's and held a reopening in 1984, 100 years to the day of its original opening. The Opera House is one of the finest in all of Europe for its history and quality of acoustics and thus is a very interesting place to come visit when in Budapest. Statues here on the Façade of the building represent some of the greatest composers in history including Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner among others and there is no question that this building is quite a work of art.

The Opera House was erected under King Franz Joseph in 1884 and has held the Opera in the city ever since. The statues of Erkel and Liszt by AlajosStrob are featured at the main entrance and it is clear upon entering the elegant interior of the Opera House that no detail was left unperfected here. There are two ways to see the Opera House, first by seeing a performance here and second by taking a tour. Check ahead of time on the Opera House's website for possible closures before heading here to take a tour. Tours are available in multiple languages and describe in great detail the rich history of the building and the role it has played in the city's history.

The beautiful marble staircase reflects the light brightly onto the exquisite paintings that are on display on the walls above. Though the construction of the Opera House took nine years originally, it is quite clear that perfection was the goal in mind and the result proved to be the most modern Opera House of its time upon its completion. Both the Ballet and Opera are held here and tickets can be purchased both online as well as at the box office. Keep in mind that you may want to order your tickets early as season events such as the Nutcracker are very popular and will sell out.

Of not is the fact that the acoustics here are known for being outstanding. Whether you are at floor level or seated high above in the arched golden balconies, there are so many great vantage points to see a show here and the beauty of the building alone is worth the price of admission. There is a rotating selection of great shows available to choose from each season from some of the best composers in history like Beethoven and Mozart. If the proposition of seeing a show here is a bit too expensive for you budget, do take the time to come down at 3 or 4 PM on select dates where affordable guided tours are offered to the public. The State Opera House is very centrally located near other great attractions as well making it an easy attraction to view on your day out in Budapest.
